PARALYSIS:

The loss of one’s own mobility and independence is a terribly traumatic event. Making matters worse, spinal cord injury victims often require extensive rehabilitative care and suffer various medical complications, even shortened life spans. The effects of paralysis or spinal cord injury can include pain, urinary and bowel tract problems, respiratory problems, and sexual dysfunction. Personal, emotional and psychological effects are often associated with a spinal cord injury as well. These can include weight control issues, alcohol or drug abuse, major depression and a very high risk of suicide in the first 10 years following an accident.

According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistics Center, the average medical cost of a spinal cord injury is more than $200,000 (as high as $600,000 for victims suffering from full quadriplegia). Treatment and rehabilitation costs for subsequent years range from $14,000 to $120,000 depending on the severity of the injury. Most paralyses caused by nervous system damage are constant in nature; however, there are forms of periodic paralysis which are caused by other factors.

AMPUTATION:

Amputation occurs when a body part is detached form the body and is usually seen when there is a severe violent trauma to an appendage such as an arm or leg, finger or toe.

Sometimes medical providers are forced to remove a limb in order to stop the spread of infections, diseases, or to stop uncontrollable bleeding. Amputees often have severe trouble following the amputation such as the severe emotional trauma that comes with losing an appendage. Also, amputee or dismemberment accident victims will typically need very strong pain management medication, mental health counseling and extensive hospitalization and rehabilitation to cope with the devastating effects of an amputation.

If your injuries resulted in an amputation, you will likely need a prosthetic. Technology changes quickly, and the prosthetic arm or leg you get today may be obsolete down the road. Most people need replacements every five to 10 years. We will work with prosthetic manufacturers to calculate future costs that you can expect to incur in the future.
